DOI 10.3109/17453670903487032 Gentamicin beads are used for musculoskeletal infections. Gentamicin is released gradually from the beads, and high gentamicin concentrations are achieved only locally. Side effects of gentamicin are rarely to be expected with gentamicin beads since only low amounts of gentamicin are released from the beads, resulting in extremely low serum concentrations of the antibiotic (Septopal SPC, Wahlig et al. 1978, Walenkamp et al. 1986). Only one case of prolonged raised gentamicin serum levels from gentamicin beads has been described to date, but no adverse effects were reported in that case (Walenkamp and Vree 1981). We present another case with ototoxicity also.

Residual gentamicin-release from antibiotic-loaded polymethylmethacrylate beads after 5 years of implantation.
In infected joint arthroplasty, high local levels of antibiotics are achieved through temporary implantation of non-biodegradable gentamicin-loaded polymethylmethacrylate beads. Despite their antibiotic release, these beads act as a biomaterial surface to which bacteria preferentially adhere, grow and potentially develop antibiotic resistance. In routine clinical practice, these beads are remov...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Late infections after total hip arthroplasty are still a problem. Treatment procedures include resection arthroplasty with implantation of antibiotic-loaded beads or implantation of an antibiotic-impreganted spacer. However, little is known about antibiotic elution from bone cement beyond the first 2-3 postoperative days in humans. METHODS 17 hip spacers (80 g PMMA, 1g ...
متن کاملThe Challenge of Vestibular Rehabilitation in a Patient with Bilateral Vestibular Dysfunction Following Surgery: A Case Report
Introduction: Bilateral vestibular dysfunction (BVD) is an uncommon finding in vestibular assessment, and the combination of BVD and orthopedic problems represents a rare and challenging case for treatment. Case Report: The patient had several previous back surgeries and received gentamycin after surgery. After 6 months, she experienced continuous dizziness, unsteadiness and oscillopsia. ...
متن کاملPatients’ safety: is there a systemic release of gentamicin by gentamicin-coated tibia nails in clinical use?
INTRODUCTION Osteitis is one of the most serious complications in orthopedic surgery. Expert Tibia Nail (ETN) PROtect™ coated with a biodegradable layer of gentamicin-laden polymer was developed for prophylaxis of osteomyelitis. In systemic administration, gentamicin has only a small therapeutic index and serious side effects; it is potentially nephrotoxic as well as ototoxic. It is not yet kno...
متن کاملL-methionine attenuates gentamicin nephrotoxicity in male Wistar rat: pathological and biochemical findings
The clinical uses of gentamicin have so far been restricted due to nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. The exact mechanism of nephrotoxicity is still unknown; however, it appears that free radicals may be involved. Methionine has previously been shown to alleviate oxidative stress involved in ototoxicity due to its antioxidant properties. Therefore, the effect of methionine supplementation on the g...
